(Hometown)

  1. 1Where is your hometown?

    Sample answer

I'm from Rasht, which is in the north of Iran, quite close to the Caspian Sea. It's the capital of Gilan province and it's surrounded by rice fields and forests, so it's much greener than most Iranian cities.

  2. 2What do you like about it?

    Sample answer

Definitely the food. Rasht is famous for its cuisine, and UNESCO has actually named it a creative city of gastronomy. I also like the rain, which might sound strange, but the weather is mild compared with the hot summers in the south.

  3. 3Is there anything you don't like about it?

    Sample answer

The humidity can be quite unpleasant in summer, and because the city has grown so fast, the traffic in the centre is terrible at rush hour.

  4. 4Has your hometown changed much in recent years?

    Sample answer

Yes, quite a lot. When I was a child there were only a few shopping centres, but now there are big malls and new apartment blocks on the edge of the city. Some people miss the old houses, though, because many of them have been knocked down.

  5. 5Would you like to live there in the future?

    Sample answer

Maybe when I'm older. For now I'd rather live in a bigger city with more job opportunities, but I can definitely imagine going back to Rasht later on, because life there is much more relaxed.

Part 2 · Cue card

Describe a place in your hometown that you like to visit.

You should say:

  • where it is
  • what it looks like
  • what you do there
  • and explain why you like it

Model answer

The place I'd like to describe is the traditional bazaar in Rasht, which is right in the centre of the city, just a short walk from the main square with the old municipality building.

It's quite different from a modern shopping centre. It's a maze of narrow lanes, partly covered and partly open, with hundreds of small shops selling fish from the Caspian, local vegetables, olives, pickles and all kinds of homemade jams. It's always noisy and a bit chaotic, and the smell of fish and herbs hits you as soon as you walk in.

I usually go there on Friday mornings with my mother. She does the serious shopping while I wander around, try some of the snacks and chat with the shopkeepers, many of whom have known my family for years. When friends from other cities visit me, it's also the first place I take them, because it gives them a real taste of Gilan in a couple of hours.

There are a few reasons why I like it so much. First, it's full of life; you see people from the villages around Rasht selling their own produce, which you never see in a supermarket. Second, it reminds me of my childhood, when my grandfather used to take me there and buy me a glass of pomegranate juice. And finally, it's one of the few places in the city that hasn't changed much, so it feels like a connection to the past.

  • بند آخر با First، Second و And finally مرتب شده.

  1. 1Why do many people move from small towns to big cities?

    Sample answer

Mainly for work and education. Big cities have more universities, better hospitals and far more job opportunities, especially for young people. The problem is that housing is much more expensive there, so many people end up living far from their workplace and spending hours in traffic.

  2. 2What are the biggest problems that large cities face?

    Sample answer

In Iran I'd say air pollution and traffic come first. In Tehran, for example, schools sometimes close in winter because the air quality is so poor. Housing costs are another serious issue, because rents have risen much faster than salaries.

  3. 3How can cities develop while keeping their history?

    Sample answer

One good approach is to give old buildings a new use instead of knocking them down. In several Iranian cities, traditional houses have been turned into cafés, hotels or museums, which protects them and also brings in money. Of course, this only works if there are strict rules about what can be built in historic areas.

  4. 4Is it better for children to grow up in a city or in the countryside?

    Sample answer

Both have advantages. Children in the countryside usually have more freedom and spend more time outdoors, which is great for their health. Cities, on the other hand, offer better schools and more activities. Ideally, I think children should live in a city but have regular contact with nature.

ممتحن معمولاً می‌پرسد Where is your hometown یا Where do you live. I'm originally from… but I live in… now.

I don't like it؛ دلیلش را توضیح بده.
