(Home)

Home یا Accommodation همراه با Work and Study رایج‌ترین شروع پارت ۱ است.

  1. 1Do you live in a house or an apartment?

    Sample answer

I live in an apartment with my parents and my younger sister. It's on the fourth floor of a building in a fairly quiet neighbourhood in the west of Tehran.

  2. 2Which room do you like most in your home?

    Sample answer

My own room, I suppose, because it's the only place where I get some privacy. I've set up a small desk by the window, and that's where I study and practise English in the evenings.

  3. 3Is there anything you would like to change about your home?

    Sample answer

I'd love a bit more space, especially a balcony where I could keep some plants. Our living room also doesn't get much sunlight, so it can feel a bit gloomy in winter.

  4. 4How long have you lived there?

    Sample answer

About twelve years now. We moved there when I started primary school, so it really feels like home, and I know most of our neighbours quite well.

  5. 5Would you like to live on your own in the future?

    Sample answer

Yes, at some point. In Iran it's common to live with your parents until you get married, but I think living alone for a while teaches you to be independent, like managing your money and cooking for yourself.

Part 2 · Cue card

Describe a home you visited that you liked.

You should say:

  • whose home it was
  • where it was
  • what it was like
  • and explain why you liked it

Model answer

I'd like to talk about my grandparents' house in Kashan, which I used to visit every Nowruz when I was a child. My grandparents have since moved into a flat, so the house is empty now, but I still think about it a lot.

It was a traditional Persian house in the old part of the city. From the street you couldn't see anything except a plain brick wall and a wooden door, but once you walked in, there was a large courtyard with a small pool in the middle and a few pomegranate and fig trees around it. All the rooms opened onto the courtyard, and in summer the whole family would sit there in the evening because it was much cooler than inside. There was also a basement, which was the coolest part of the house in the afternoons.

What I liked about it was partly the design itself. It's amazing how the people who built it managed to keep the house comfortable in a desert climate without any air conditioning, just by using thick walls, a wind catcher and water.

But mostly I liked it because of the atmosphere. There were always cousins running around, my grandmother cooking in the kitchen and relatives dropping in without calling first. Compared with the apartments most of us live in now, it felt much more open and sociable, and I think that's something modern homes have lost.

  1. 1What makes a home comfortable?

    Sample answer

For me it's less about size and more about light, quiet and having a space that's your own. A small flat can be very comfortable if it gets natural light and you can close the door and concentrate. The people you live with matter too, of course.

  2. 2Why do many young people in cities rent rather than buy?

    Sample answer

Mostly because they can't afford to buy. In cities like Tehran, property prices have risen much faster than salaries, so saving for a deposit can take decades. Renting also gives young people more flexibility if they need to move for work.

  3. 3How are homes today different from homes in the past?

    Sample answer

They're much smaller and more private. Traditional houses were built around a courtyard and often shared by several generations, whereas most people now live in apartments with just their immediate family. Modern homes are more convenient, but in my view neighbours know each other much less than before.

  4. 4Should governments build more affordable housing?

    Sample answer

I think they should, especially in big cities where ordinary workers are being pushed out to the suburbs. However, it has to be planned properly, with public transport, schools and shops nearby. Otherwise you just create large, isolated neighbourhoods that people don't actually want to live in.
